The Cumberland Valley Christian Blazers picked up a pair of girls basketball victories, routing the Frederick Warriors 44-15 Thursday in a non-league game and pulling away from Grace Academy to capture a 46-32 decision Friday at Homecoming in a Mason-Dixon Christian Conference game and run their winning streak to six games.
In Friday’s game, Grace applied pesky defense and led the Blazers 9-8 at the end of the first quarter. The Blazers (12-5, 7-2 MDCC) rallied to go ahead 22-18 at the half.
The Blazers took control in the third quarter by outscoring the Knights 18-8. Amber Yanosik scored seven points, Laurel Reitz added six and Kyleigh Teal contributed five points in the period.
“We started off slowly but we pressed and our D got much better,” CVCS coach Dylan Ward said. “We forced them to be uncomfortable and outscored them by 10 in the third to seal the game.”
Freshmen Yanosik and Reitz each finished with 14 points to lead the Blazers, and Teal, a junior, scored 10 points. Also reaching the scoring column were freshman Keagan Yarboro with six points and junior Jalen Moats with two points.
In Thursday’s victory, the Blazers held the home-school group from Frederick without a field goal in the first half and romped to a 25-2 halftime lead.
“Eight girls scored. It was a total team effort in all aspects of the game,” Ward said.
Teal led the Blazers with 12 points and Yanosik added 11. Also scoring for the Blazers were Reitz with seven, Mollee Stake with five, Mariah Peck with three, and Moats, Imagen Travis and Emmalyn Hott with two apiece.
