Sophomores Caleb Eckert and Blaine Minnier combined for 43 points to lead the Cumberland Valley Christian Blazers to a 55-46 victory over the Frederick (Md.) Warriors Thursday evening in a non-league boys basketball game.
Eckert scored 22 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for the Blazers (7-11), who held a big 48-27 advantage on the boards. He also had three assists, three steals and two blocked shots. Minnier scored 21 points and pulled down eight rebounds.
The Warriors scored the first bucket of the game, but the Blazers quickly took the lead and never trailed thereafter. They led 17-8 at the end of the first period on the strength of Minnier’s three 3-pointers and Eckert’s eight points. They held a 28-21 halftime lead and then built a 20-point cushion in the third quarter before coach Austin Sanders got the opportunity to play his subs a majority of the final period.
“It was a good collective win tonight,” Sanders said. “The starters were able to get going early, and that allowed for some other players to get quality minutes off the bench. I think our defense and rebounding were key factors in putting this one away. I thought we played well and had good energy after not having a practice this week. Hopefully we can ride this momentum into tomorrow night.”
The Blazers host Grace Academy for Homecoming on Friday.
Also contributing to the Blazer effort were Isaac Kauffeldt with six points, Nathan Statler with three points and eight rebounds, Triston Horn with three points, Ken Hott with three steals, and Josiah Ziebarth with five rebounds.
