After trailing for all but a few seconds of the second half, the Cumberland Valley Christian Blazers rallied to take a 38-37 victory over Calvary Christian Tuesday evening in a Mason-Dixon Christian Conference boys basketball game.
Sophomore Caleb Eckert tapped in his own missed shot with less than 20 seconds remaining to put the Blazers ahead.
“I felt like Caleb had a monster game on offense and on the boards,” CVCS coach Austin Sanders said. “He made the game winning bucket when we needed him the most.”
Eckert wound up with 27 points, 24 rebounds and six blocked shots to lead the Blazers (5-7, 3-3 MDCC). He scored all 12 of their points in the final quarter.
The Blazers bolted to a 13-0 lead to start the game but then went cold from the field. Calvary, fueled by Will Speis’ 16 points, outscored the Blazers 26-6 the rest of the half and led 26-19 at halftime. Calvary held a 31-26 edge at the end of the third quarter.
The Blazers went to a box-and-one with Kenneth Hott hounding Speis in the second half and held him to three points.
“It wasn’t pretty but we did enough to win this game,” Sanders said. “Number 15 (Speis) gave us problems defensively in the first half, and Kenneth did a great job of pressuring him in the second half.”
Also scoring for the Blazers were Blaine Minnier with five points and a team-high three assists, and Triston Horn, Nathan Statler and Jacob Russell with two points each.
