CATAWISSA — The Chambersburg wrestling team went 4-0 at the Southern Columbia Duals on Saturday, including a big win over Gettysburg, but did not get the chance to challenge the host Tigers in the championship match.
A Trojan wrestler who was out sick this week had to be rushed to Chambersburg Hospital for some tests, and his family, who was at the tournament, had to leave immediately for home.
“They found out about halfway through our match against Blue Mountain, and when it was over and the whole team found out, they were all pretty emotional,” Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer said.
“It was pretty scary, because he was being tested for some very serious stuff. I went to the Southern Columbia guys and let them know what was happening, and said I was taking the team home. They were very classy about it, because they understood.”
After the team arrived in Chambersburg, Mentzer said he found out most of the key tests came back negative.
“Everything we’ve heard since has been positive, so that’s good. We just have to get back to being healthy.”
The Trojans (9-1), defeated Milton 49-27 and Penncrest 68-9, edged Gettysburg 34-34 — winning on the criteria of having 8 wins to 6 for the Warriors — and beat Blue Mountain 51-21.
Tyler Smith (113), Tate Nichter (145), Seth Runshaw (152), Carson Mello (160), Luke Nichter (170) and Guy Lozius (195) all went 4-0 on the day, while Karl Shindledecker (120) and Wyatt Hull (220) were each 3-1 and Zae Kirk (160) was 2-1.
Against Gettysburg, the Trojans got a big pin from Hull in the second bout to go ahead 9-0.
Mentzer said, “That was probably the biggest match. It was close in the third period and Hull got in a body lock and threw him for a pin.”
The Warriors came back to lead 28-18, but a technical fall by Tate Nichter and decision by Runshaw made it 28-26. Gettysburg scored a pin to make it 34-26. Mello earned an 8-1 decision at 170, then Luke Nichter notched a 15-0 technical fall at 182 in the last bout to tie it up.
“We knew if Luke could get a tech fall, we would win, because we already had seven wins to their six,” Mentzer said. “He took care of it pretty confidently.”
