WRESTLING
Central Dauphin 36, Chambersburg 26: The Trojans, with a depleted lineup, suffered their first defeat of the season, a Mid Penn Commonwealth road verdict against Central Dauphin on Thursday night.
“We had a lot of close misses, and we had four matches we were ahead in that we just didn’t finish,” Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer said.
“A lot of things had to go (CD’s) way for them to win this dual, and they got them. I feel like we missed an opportunity.”
The Trojans were without Spencer Runshaw at 138 (sick), and Karl Shindledecker wrestled sick up two weights at 126 in the first bout of the night. He had a 4-1 lead after one period, but was beaten 8-5.
“He competed well, but he told me he was maybe a 6 out of 10, and he didn’t have the lungs at the end,” Mentzer said.
At 132, Cole Grove was ahead early, but in the third period, with him trailing 7-3, Mentzer stopped the match for a default because Grove has been dealing with an injury that was re-aggravated.
“That turned out to be a 10-point swing because I thought we might get bonus points there,” Mentzer said. “Losing those first two matches really affected the mood of everybody and it took us a while to shake it.”
Chambersburg (5-1, 2-1 MPC) got it going after going down 14-0, scoring 20 straight points on a pin in 22 seconds by Tate Nichter at 145, decisions at 152 by Seth Runshaw and 160 by Zae Kirk and major decisions by Carson Mello at 170 and Luke Nichter at 182.
“Tate had a nice pin over a good kid (Hunter Bentz), Seth beat a good kid (Mitchell Arch), Zae got us a nice win and Carson and Luke did their jobs getting bonus points,” Mentzer said.
But Central Dauphin (2-1, 2-1 MPC) won the next five bouts to clinch the win, including a 4-2 win in sudden victory by Nathaniel Mosey over Guy Lozuis at 195, and a 6-4 win at 285 by Jaden Baylor over Wyatt Hull on a late takedown.
Mentzer said, “We were ahead in both of those, too. Hull had what we thought was a bout-winning takedown at the edge right in front of us, but he was called out, and then Baylor got his winning takedown.
“We have a tough schedule coming up and we need to get back to being healthy.”

Chambersburg spread the wealth, with seven different swimmers placing first in a race — C.J. Pong (200 freestyle, 2:01.76), Jacob Greenwood (200 IM, 2:18.15), Colby Estep (butterfly, 1:05.06), Avery Barley (100 free, 55.80), Jacob Shifler (400 free, 4:54.01), Gavin Vink (backstroke, 1:18.06) and Michael Johnson (breaststroke, 1:18.06).

For the Greyhounds, Elijah Zinn captured first place in the 50 free, in 25.65.
“The boys’ team displayed their depth and speed in today’s competition,” Trojan girls coach Donnie Miller said. “Gavin Vink, Jacob Shifler and Colby Estep were among the athletes who excelled with performances that stood out tonight.”

GIRLS SWIMMING
Shippensburg 101, Chambersburg 69: The Lady Hounds’ strong team took first place in 8 of the 11 events, including all three relays, to top the Trojans in a non-league meet.
Julia Strine won the 200 free in 2:20.09 and the butterfly in 1:13.42, and was on two relay teams. Madison Osanitch took the 400 free in 4:50.02 and the breaststroke in 1:24.12, and was on two relays.
Makenna Morris was the other Ship winner, first in the 100 free in 1:02.35, and was on two relays. Also swimming legs on the relays were Madelyn Facchinei, Rachel Connor, Mia Estep and Teddi Powell.
“Shippensburg has some talented swimmers who will definitely be making a name for themselves in the post-season,” Chambersburg girls coach Donnie Miller said. “(Former Chambersburg swimmer) Chandler Johnson is doing an excellent job as a first-year head coach. Best of luck to all of them as their season continues.”
For the Trojans (0-4), three girls picked up victories — Liv Terrazas in the 200 IM (2:38.66), Maddie Kinton in the 50 free (29.37) and Emma Grove in the backstroke (1:21.46). All three had a second-place finish, as did Emily Stroble and Alea Burkholder.
Miller said, “Liv Terrazas swam a fast meet, turning in a personal best time in both the IM and the breaststroke. Maddie Kinton looked strong today and is getting her speed back. Emily Stroble continues to produce fast times in the distance events, and Emma Grove and Alea Burkholder both had best times today in the backstroke.”
