CHAMBERSBURG — Nearly 1,200 wrestlers from middle school through high school varsity descended on the CASHS Field House and Auxiliary Gym on Friday for the 5th annual MyHOUSE Trojan Wars Tournament.

When the long day of wrestling was complete, seven area wrestlers in the varsity division still have their title hopes alive. They will compete in the quarterfinals starting at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Host Chambersburg pushed four into the quarters — No. 3 seed Cole Grove (126), No. 2 seed Tate Nichter (145), No. 6 seed Seth Runshaw (152) and No. 1 seed Luke Nichter (170).

Shippensburg has a pair still alive — Jeffery Russell at 113, the No. 3 seed, and Dylan Ramsey at 126, the second seed. Also, Waynesboro 285-pounder Raul Shatzer, the No. 4 seed, advanced.

All four of Chambersburg’s quarterfinalists racked up two pins, including a first-round stick in just 15 seconds by Grove.

In the first rounds of the day, the Trojans went 9-4, but were only 4-5 in the second round.

The toughest loss of that round came at 113, when Karl Shindledecker met Ship’s Russell. The match was scoreless through two periods, with Russell riding Shindledecker for the second period.

While on top in the third, Shindledecker was called for locked hands, giving Russell a point. He then let Russell up for an escape and a 2-0 lead, hoping for a takedown to tie it up, but Russell held him off.

Earlier, Russell scored a pin, while Ramsey got through with a tough 1-0 win over Kyle Miller of Cumberland Valley and an 11-1 major.

Waynesboro’s Shatzer scored two pins on his way to the quarters. Greencastle-Antrim did not have any wrestlers advance.

Chambersburg also has six wrestlers alive in the consolation rounds, including Shindledecker (113), Kelby Mixell (132), Spencer Runshaw (138), Carson Mello (160), Guy Lozius (195) and Wyatt Hull (220).

Notre Dame Green Pond, a Class 2A power from District 11, looks to be the school to beat for the team title. Notre Dame brought only nine wrestlers, but eight of them advanced to the quarterfinals.

St. Christopher’s and J.W. Robinson, both schools from Virginia, each put six in the quarters, while Carlisle, Spring Grove and Southern Columbia had five each.

The quarterfinals begin at 10 a.m., the semifinals start at 1:30, and the championships are scheduled for 6:20 p.m. for both varsity and middle school in the CASHS Field House.

All three varsity rounds Saturday will be available online on live stream, on MidPennBroadcasting.com.
