WRESTLING
MyHOUSE Trojan Wars: Chambersburg’s big holiday tournament has grown again, with 47 varsity teams and 34 middle school teams, plus junior varsity wrestlers, competing Friday and Saturday at CASHS Field House and Auxiliary Gym.

Varsity wrestling is expected to begin around 10 a.m. Friday, with the round of 16 starting around 4:30 p.m. On Saturday, the quarterfinals are at 10 a.m., the semifinals at 1:30 and the finals at 6:20.

The latest state rankings by Pa.Power Wrestling lists 83 kids who are expected to compete at the Trojan Wars, which has a new sponsor in MyHouse Sports Gear.

That includes one No. 1-ranked wrestler, five ranked No. 2 and 15 others ranked in the top 10. The No. 1 at 120 is Ryan Crookham of Notre Dame Green Pond, who is the top-ranked freshman in the country at any weight.

The event also returns five champions and includes three wrestlers who were PIAA runners-up last year.

Locally, the Trojans, Shippensburg, Waynesboro and Greencastle-Antrim are competing. Among those teams, eight wrestlers received seeds.

Luke Nichter of Chambersburg (9-1) is the No. 1 seed at 170 pounds. Ship’s Dylan Ramsey is seeded No. 2 at 126, while the Trojans’ Cole Grove (6-3) is No. 3 at that weight. Tate Nichter of Chambersburg (5-0) is No. 3 at 145.

The other seeds include No. 4 Jeffery Russell of Ship at 113, No. 4 Raul Shatzer of Waynesboro at 285, No. 6 Seth Runshaw of Chambersburg (8-2) at 152 and No. 10 Spencer Runshaw of the Trojans (6-2) at 138.

“We came out of the Beast (of the East tourney) healthy, and that’s always a concern,” Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer said. “We had two good workouts Wednesday. I told them that January’s schedule will be crazy and we’ll only have maybe five, six or seven more days we can practice hard, so it was good to get them in.

“This tournament is a little different for us because it’s at home, but I always try to stress to the kids that the prep for every event is the same.”

Also expected to wrestle for the Trojans are Tyler Smith (3-1) at 106, Karl Shindledecker (1-1) at 113, Anthony Colangelo (4-3) at 120, Kelby Mixell (1-4) at 132, Carson Mello (8-2) at 160, Zae Kirk (1-0) at 182, Guy Lozius (5-3) at 195 and Wyatt Hull (7-3) at 220.

Notre Dame Green Pond has 10 wrestlers seeded in the top six, and is considered one of the favorites coming in. Defending champion Southern Columbia, J.W. Robinson of Fairfax, Va. and St. Christopher’s of Richmond are also expected to be in the running.
