Blazer girls open season with win

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Cumberland Valley Christian Blazers turned in a strong defensive effort and defeated Heritage Christian School of Woodbridge, Va., 38-16 on Thursday night in the semifinal round of the season-opening Rosedale Baptist girls basketball tournament.

The Blazers held HCS to just 4 first-half points, and controlled the pace of play with their defense. They forced Heritage into 24 turnovers.

“I really loved our aggressiveness tonight in our zone press and how we were able to get steals and easy transition points from that. It was a great building block game for the rest of our season,” Blazers coach Dylan Ward said.

The Blazers were led in scoring by freshman Amber Yanosik with 14 points, 3 rebounds and 4 steals.  Freshman Laurel Reitz had 9 points, 4 assists and 4 steals, and junior Kyleigh Teal had 7 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals for the Blazers. Junior Jalen Moats grabbed a team-high 8 rebounds.

The Blazers (1-0) continue play in the tournament on Saturday.
