NEWVILLE >> It’s become a bit routine for Adam Houser.
And while 200-yard rushing games are nothing to overlook, Houser had already accomplished the feat two other times this season. But this one was special.
Not only did Shippensburg dominate Big Spring, 53-14 to capture the Little Brown Jug and solidify a home playoff game next week, with 266 yards rushing, Houser broke the single-season rushing record at Shippensburg High School, as well as the school’s career rushing record.
“I got emotional, I’m not going to lie,” Houser said of breaking the record. “I’ve worked tremendously hard for this. It’s something that comes along during the season, and now we have a home playoff game next week.”
“What Adam brings on Fridays is great,” Ship coach Eric Foust said of Houser, “but what he brings on Mondays through Thursdays is pretty darn great too. He’s a great leader, good worker and a great kid to be around. He’s everything you ask from a player as a coach.”
A four-year contributor for the Greyhounds (9-1, 5-1 Mid Penn Colonial Division), Houser carried the ball just 21 times and scored five touchdowns to lead a dominant rushing attack. He was held to under 100 yards just one time all regular season.
“It’s all credit to our offensive line and what we’ve been able to accomplish as a group,” Houser said. “Jacob Loy tells me every game we’re getting 300 or 350 yards. Something crazy before every game. But it motivates me.”
Shippensburg came out in a heavy formation with two tight ends, two fullbacks blocking for Houser, and Houser took his third carry of the game 55 yards for the opening score. Big Spring (3-7, 1-5 MPC) answered with a 14-yard pass from Timothy Siwy to Adam Degregario, but that would be as close as the Bulldogs would get all night.
Staying in the heavy formation, Houser scored two more times in the first half before Shippensburg capped off the second quarter with an 83-yard pass from Zack Manning to Nick Gustafson. It came off a play-action pass out of the heavy formation, and Gustafson was left uncovered.
“Our offensive line wanted to come out in that heavy formation, and I think they earned the right to do that,” Foust said. “They dominated the game from start to finish. We had two guys rush for 100 yards, and Zack threw for 100.”
Along with Houser’s brilliant game, his lead blocker, Loy, also had a strong performance. After Houser rushed for two scores in the third quarter, Loy opened the scoring in the fourth with a 48-yard touchdown scamper. He finished with 133 yards on 14 carries.
Loy started the season at linebacker but transitioned to fullback about midway through the year.
“I was nervous about the switch when it happened,” Loy said, “but it’s been great. Adam and I are very close, and it’s been a good experience for the whole offense. I just consider myself the linebacker of the offense, because I still get to hit plenty of people.”
With the win, Shippensburg, at worst, clinches a share of the Mid Penn Colonial Division title and will also host a playoff game next week. But the biggest team prize of the night was capturing the Little Brown Jug for the eighth consecutive year.
“We knew that if we came out fast and really stepped on them early, we could run away with this,” Houser said. “We played a great game all around.”
Manning needed just four completions to throw for 141 yards for Ship, and Gustafson had two catches for 97 yards.
For the Bulldogs. Siwy threw for 116 yards, and Degregario finished with six catches for 69 yards.
