HAGERSTOWN, Md. – Calvary Christian exploded for three goals right before halftime and defeated the Cumberland Valley Christian Blazers 5-2 Saturday night in the Mason-Dixon Christian Conference boys soccer championship game at North Hagerstown High School.
The Blazers (17-5) took a 1-0 lead on a goal by YeGeon Choi. They pretty much controlled the first 30 minutes of the game but could not expand the lead.
Second-seeded Calvary found the net three times in the final 10 minutes to lead 3-1 at halftime.
The Blazers got a goal less than two minutes into the second half when a Calvary defender inadvertently kicked the ball into his own goal. The Blazer goal was credited to Joel Vandersleen. That made the score 3-2, but Calvary regained the two-goal margin a few minutes later on a penalty kick.
The Blazers won the MDCC regular-season championship before finishing second in the tournament. They are traveling to Tennessee to play in the National Association of Christian Athletes (NACA) season-ending tournament Wednesday through Friday.
