YORK — Chambersburg senior Mary Kate Norcross played her way into great shape after the first of two rounds at the PIAA Class 3A Girls Golf Championship on Monday.
Norcross fired a 3-over par 75 at Heritage Hills in York. That put her one stroke behind the leader, Caroline Wrigley of North Allegheny. The final round is Tuesday.
“I’m just going to try to hit fairways and greens tomorrow,” said Norcross, who won the District 3 title earlier this month.
The Trojan ace started on hole No. 10 and on that first nine holes, she was 3-over after six holes until she birdied No. 17, a short, dog-leg par 4. She hit a 5-wood into the fairway, then knocked a wedge to about 10 feet and sank the putt for a 38.
On her back nine, Norcross opened with a strong of eight consecutive pars before bogeying her final hole, No. 9, to score a 37.
“I was hitting everything pretty solid today, except for maybe a few irons,” Norcross said. “My driving was solid and my putting was really good. The times I didn’t hit a good iron, I was able to hit a good putt.”
“I am very proud of her and the way she played,” Trojan coach Mark Yost said. “Hard work paid off today.”
Norcross said that having experience from being at states a year ago played a big role.
“It was definitely better mentally this year,” she said. “You know where to go and who is who and you see some familiar faces.
“And it helps to know how to play this course. We played a practice round yesterday and I played it last year and you have to know where to hit your shots. Like, they have a few two-tiered greens, so shots to them are all about placement.”
Wrigley’s score of 74 was highlighted when she rolled in an eagle putt on the par 5 No. 9 green. Danae Rugola of Uniontown is third with a 76 and two players are tied with 78s — Caroline McConnell of South Fayette and Samantha Yao of Conestoga.
