JB football makes history in 35-14 victory

Friday night was a special night for the James Buchanan Rocket football team.

Yeah, the Rockets earned their fourth win of the season, beating the Pottsville BVM Green Wave 35-14, but in the process they had 2 players make school history.

Senior running back Cormac Houpt eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark for the season and became the schools all-time single-season leading rusher.

Junior quarterback Sebastian Wise also broke the 1,000-yard mark for the season with his passing.

Houpt, who rushed for 192 yards and 3 TDs, went over 1,000 yards with an 8-yard run in the first quarter. He became the single-season record holder with his 61-yard TD run with 1:31 left in the game.

Wise joined the 1,000-yard passing club with his 66-yard TD toss to Owen Stoner at the 3:05 mark of the first quarter.

“Both of them were letting the game come to them,” JB coach David Miller. “If there was anyone a little anxious to get them both of 1,000 it was me with my play calling. I’m extremely happy for both of them.”

Houpt broke Jason Neil’s single-season record of 1,091 yards, which had stood since 2001. Houpt now has 1,171 yards and 15 TDs on the season with 2 games remaining.

“Cormac is a special talent,” Miller said. “He has left his mark on our program.”

Wise, who passed for 174 yards and 2 TDs, now has 1,074 yards and 11 TDs on the season.

“Sebastian is just finding out how good he can be,” Miller said. “He has even more motivation to have a big senior season next year and finish this season strong.”

The victory moves JB to 4-4, its most victories since 2014 and it has the chance to have the most wins, with 2 games remaining, since the 1995 Rocket team that finished 6-4.

“When we were 1-3 I didn’t know if we’d get to this point,” Miller said. “This a huge deal now to our players. Hopefully we can continue to play well.”

NOTES: Owen Stoner finished with 4 catches for 90 yards … Defensively for the Rockets, Caleb Wise (17 tackles) and Scott Seburn (16 tackles) had big games as did Logan Miller (13) and Owen Stoner (11).
