Raise your hand if you’ve ever heard of the Ceasar Chavez-Parkside Eagles from the Washington D.C. area.
Since very few people probably raised their hand for that one how about raising your hand if you know who Kipp College Prep, Paul Public Charter International, Ron Brown, National Collegiate Prep or Kingsman Academy are.
No one.
Come on, those are all house-hold high school football teams that the Eagles have played this season and next on their schedule is a trip to Mercersburg to take on the James Buchanan Rockets.
The Rockets will play host to Chavez-Parkside Friday night with an early 6 p.m. kickoff.
“I know who they are and some of the teams they have played from when I coached at St. James,” JB coach David Miller said. “They’re not one of the strong DC programs like DeMatha, Gonzaga or St. John’s, but they play some decent teams.”
The Cardinals are 3-4, having lost 2 straight including a 2-0 forfeit loss to Kingsman Academy last Friday.
“I have no idea what that’s all about, but our AD confirmed with their AD earlier this week and they are coming,” Miller said.
On the season Parkside has lost to Maret (47-6), Kipp (20-8) and National Collegiate Prep (24-14) while beating Paul Public (14-6) and Ron Brown (20-16).
“They run a spread offense, but are pretty run heavy,” Miller said. “The quarterback is their best athlete. He will pull it down and run with it so on defense we have to make sure not to over pursue. We need to breakdown in our gaps and play disciplined football.”
Miller definitely emphasized those last two defensive segments (breaking down, discipline) at practice this week after last Friday’s 61-47 loss at Frederick. The Rockets gave up 9 touchdowns and over 400 yards of offense.
“We have to give credit where is credit is do,” Miller said. “Frederick was fast, but having said that we didn’t do a good job reading our keys. We didn’t keep good gap integrity and missed some tackles. Hopefully this week we’ll do a better job.”
And Miller hopes the Rockets can continue to roll on offense as the last 2 weeks its put up 41 and 47 points.
“We just need to keep pounding between the tackles,” Miller said. “It was nice to see our balance (between rush and pass) last week.”
