Shippensburg ready to take on undefeated Mustangs

Sporting an undefeated, 6-0 record with a 2-0 mark in the conference, word in the Mid Penn is that West Perry’s football team is the new king of the Colonial Division.

Don’t say that too loud around Shippensburg.

The Greyhounds (5-1, 2-1 MPC) will look to put an end to that talk Friday when they travel to West Perry to face off against the Mustangs.

“They’re a good team, and they’re win over Northern last week was impressive,” Ship coach Eric Foust said. “They are opportunistic, they hustle and they have a good rushing attack, but we’re going to be ready to play our best football on Friday.”

The Mustangs are coming off a 42-20 win over Northern York last week and are led by quarterback Kenyon Johnson and running back Terrance Quaker. Johnson had 133 yards on the ground last week and was 5 of 5 passing. Quaker added 102 yards rushing. On the season, Johnson has totaled 531 rushing yards, while Quaker has 405.

But Shippensburg has a potent rush attack of its own, led by Adam Houser, who has 109 carries for 944 yards on the season. He has just one game without a 100-yard performance and is coming off a 188-yard game against Greencastle-Antrim last week, which Shippensburg won 26-14.

Foust said, “We’ve heard a lot about their running game, but we have our own back who has just about as many yards as they have combined. We are prepared this week, and if we can handle their tricks, not make mistakes and not give up the big play, I think we will be fine.”

At quarterback, Zack Manning is coming off a two-touchdown performance last week. He was 4 of 7 for 74 yards, with both touchdown tosses going to Nick Gustafson.

Outside of Northern York (4-2) none of West Perry’s opponents have winning records, with their previous opponents combining for an 8-29 record.

“They’re averaging 40 points per game. That’s great, but I think we can slow them down,” Foust said. “They are definitely a good team, but we have a good team too. Don’t crown them yet.”

Shippensburg will likely have to play its best game of the season to topple the undefeated Mustangs, but a win would be a statement to the rest of the Colonial Division.
