Trojans blast Altoona 48-28 to run record to amazing 4-0

ALTOONA — “It’s been a magical season so far,” Chambersburg football coach Mark Luther said.

And fun, too.

The Trojans kept it going with another well-rounded performance in a 48-28 victory over Altoona on Friday night at Mansion Park in their first Mid Penn Commonwealth game of the season, raising their record to a remarkable 4-0.

In the season opener, Chambersburg snapped a 19-game losing streak. The win Friday broke an 18-game losing skid of Commonwealth games that stretched back to Oct. 9, 2015 against Mifflin County.

So, yes, the Trojans have produced some magic, but there was nothing fluky about the win. The offense gained 461 yards, the defense had three takeaways and the special teams had some big plays, too.

Luther said, “We were flat and Altoona was taking it to us early, so it was a learning experience. We have to learn how to fight through that, make a play and find a way. And we did. I’m so proud of these kids.”

Some of the highlights from Friday included:

— Running back stud Keyshawn Jones carried 25 times for 245 yards and three touchdowns, while quarterback Brady Stumbaugh added another 94 yards and two TDs on the ground, and 90 yards in the air.

— Kyere Morton picked off a pass and returned it 39 yards to complete a burst of 21 Chambersburg points in just a minute and 34 seconds of the second period to give the Trojans the lead for good.

— When Altoona scrambled back to within 34-28 with 6:42 left in the game, Kevin Lee ran the kickoff back 45 yards to set up a quick Chambersburg score to regain momentum.

— The defense surrendered 301 yards on the ground, but had two picks, recovered a fumble at the Mountain Lion 8 that resulted in a score, and held Altoona on downs twice in the fourth quarter.

Jones said, “We thought we had a great chance to start 4-0. Now we need to keep it going.”

Jones wowed the crowd, ripping off gains of 11, 11, 10, 34, 33, 13, 34 again, 26, 31 and 10.

Altoona coach Nick Felus, who was coached by Luther when he played at Lock Haven, said, “Jones is a really good back. He’s talented and they have good schemes for him, but we needed to tackle better, too.”

“Instead of going inside all the time, I was able to get outside because we had good blocking at the edge,” Jones said.

Stumbaugh had his best game rushing and would have been over 100 yards except for a 19-yard loss on his first attempt.

Luther said, “We know teams will be keying on Keyshawn, and Brady responded well tonight. He made some great pulls and got to the edge. Everyone across the board, from the front five to the receivers, blocked well tonight.”

Altoona (2-2, 0-1 MPC) got on the board first, but the Trojans put three scores together in quick fashion. Stumbaugh and Jones had back-to-back runs of 34 yards each and Jones scored from the 2.

On the Mountain Lions’ first play from their 5, Mitchell Lawhead fumbled and Tucker Perry recovered at the 8. On the second play, Jones scored from the 3.

Then two plays after that, Altoona QB Conner McCarthy tried to find a receiver in the right flat, but Morton picked the pass off and went 39 yards for a touchdown, making it 20-7.

Morton said, “I was in the right spot at the right time, and like we practice, I got under the receiver. I think I was low enough that the quarterback couldn’t see me, and when I caught it, I just sprinted.”

The Mountain Lions scored again with 4:42 left in the half, but the Trojans came right back with an impressive drive, going 80 yards in nine plays. It culminated in a well-executed play-action pass.

Stumbaugh faked to Jones, then pulled up and looked to his right. Then he quickly turned back to the middle and hit the wide-open Diller for 17 yards, putting Chambersburg up 27-14 at halftime.

Diller said, “The main objective on that is to pull the safety over, and then I had a free release. I didn’t know how open I was until I got to the end zone and nobody had tackled me.”

The Trojans made it 34-14 on a 1-yard Stumbaugh run. The big play in the drive was a 30-yard pass from Jones to Perry, who came back nicely to beat the defenders.

But the Mountain Lions weren’t done. After Altoona was stopped on a fourth-and-4 play at the Chambersburg 27, Stumbaugh had a pass go off the hands of a receiver to Isaiah Barnes, who returned it 61 yards to the house. Altoona then scored on a 21-yard pass from McCarthy to Connor Adams and suddenly, with 6:42 left, it was 34-28 and the crowd had gotten awake.

But Lee returned the kickoff 45 yards to the Mountain Lion 40. Jones then ran around the right side for 31 yards, and two plays later, Stumbaugh crashed in from the 6 and the lead was back to 13.

“From last year, we know what it’s like to be down,” Diller said. “But now we’re working hard to get right back into the race.”

Felus said, “We got it to within six, then there was that big momentum swing back their way. It’s like we’d take a step forward, and then take two steps back.”

Jones ended the scoring on a 10-yard jaunt after the defense held Altoona on another fourth down play.

NOTES: Placekicker Tyler Luther was hurt in a soccer game Thursday, but younger brother Tanner came in and made all but one (partially blocked) extra point, and averaged 34.6 yards on his punts … He put Altoona on its own 5 with a kickoff and at its 10 on a punt … Karter Jones intercepted a pass for the Trojans in the last minute … Perry caught three passes for 54 yards … Altoona ran 72 plays to Chambersburg’s 60.

Chambersburg travels to State College next Friday.
