While steady rain soaked all of south central Pennsylvania over the past week, it hasn’t dampened Shippensburg football’s focus heading into its first division game of the season.
The Greyhounds (3-0) open play in the Mid Penn Colonial Division at home Friday against Waynesboro, who is 2-1 and coming off a 21-16 win over Gettysburg last week.
“Waynesboro is a very good defensive team,” Ship coach Eric Foust said. “We are going to have to be able to move the ball. They blitz a lot and have a good line. It’s going to be a challenge.”
The Indians didn’t score any points on offense last week against Gettysburg, cashing in on a pick-six, a fumble recovery for a touchdown, and a field goal attempt that was blocked by Gettysburg, but the Indians picked it up and scored.
Shippensburg, however, has turned the ball over just one time on offense, a fumble, and have limited mistakes on special teams since the season opener, when it had a punt blocked and another one muffed on a bad snap.
“We’ve worked a lot on special teams over the last two weeks. We still have to get a little bit better, but it’s been a big focus for us lately,” Foust said.
Ship’s offense will continue to be led by Adam Houser, who has amassed 548 yards on 54 carries, which is just over 10 yards per carry. He also has seven touchdowns. He had 18 carries for 233 yards last week.
Zack Manning also had his best game of the early part of the season last week, going 6 of 9 through the air with 105 yards and a touchdown. He also added a touchdown on the ground.
And while Ship’s strong rush attack versus Waynesboro’s aggressive defense will be the storyline of the game, Foust thinks the little things could be the difference between a win and a loss.
“I really think this is going to come down to who is more aggressive, Foust said. “Whoever can bring the most energy will win this game. Plus, whoever avoids the big mistake.”
If the Hounds can control the ball on offense like they have for the first three games, they will be in position to keep a zero in the loss column for another week.
