Chambersburg rdp 9/11: Trojan teams produce unbeaten day

Donovan Hazelton

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
Chambersburg 15, CD East 49; Chambersburg 29, Mifflin County 29 (Chbg. won tiebreaker): The Trojans had the highest-placing sixth-place finisher to win the tiebreaker over the Huskies.

Mifflin County had the first-, second- and fourth-place finishers, but the Trojans went 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 to forge a tie. The key finisher was Chambersburg’s seventh man, Donovan Hazelton, who out-kicked the Huskies’ No. 5 runner in the final stretch by a tenth of a second for 12th place to give MC one more point.

“The results were so messed up, and we thought we’d lost by a point,” Trojan coach John Ambrosio said. “Once we got to the bus, we realized there were some mistakes. They had Donovan passing another Chambersburg kid for 12th, and we thought the next guy was their sixth, not their fifth. We’ll email them tomorrow to make sure it’s right.”

For Chambersburg (2-0, 2-0 MPC), Trent Overcash was third in 17:02, Justin Maxwell was fifth in 17:29, Joe Corwell was sixth in 17:31, Orion Kimberly took seventh in 17:34, Brayden Boyd was eighth in 17:55 and Nick Monheim was ninth in 17:58.

Ambrosio said, “We had a good day Saturday (7th at the PTXC10 race) and I was real happy with the results today. When the season started, Mifflin County was ranked No. 12 in the state.”

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
Chambersburg 25, CD East 36; Chambersburg 22, Mifflin County 39: The Trojans opened their dual meet season with a pair of wins in Lewistown.

“The gap between No. 1 and 3 was not that great, but it was closer for 3 through 5,” Chambersburg coach Chris Monheim said. “We need to tighten up in the top three spots. We’re headed in the right direction.”

Keira Whitehead ran the course in 20:17 to place third for the Trojans (2-0, 2-0 MPC). She was followed by Anna DeGrange (5th, 21:10), Maddie Kinton (7th, 22:07), Olivia Rieck (8th, 22:10) and Allison List (9th, 22:20).

BOYS GOLF
Chambersburg wins MPC Colonial match: Playing without one of its top players, the Trojans still managed a 30-stroke victory in a Mid Penn Colonial Division match at Greencastle Golf Club.

Chambersburg has enough girls to compete as a girls team, so Mary Kate Norcross will not be playing with the boys team.

But the Trojans had Karsen Rush fire a 3-under par 69 tie for medalist honors with West Perry’s Ben Smith, and Grayson Hopple (76) and Spencer Rajtik (79) both break 80. All shot their best scores of the season.

Also scoring for Chambersburg (24-0) were Jacob Carlin (88) and Owen Reichelderfer (94), as the team posted a score of 312 on the par-72 layout.

“I was pleased with the boys’ scoring, especially since we haven’t been able to practice much,” Trojan coach Mark Yost said. “A 3-under for Karsen is good — that was solid scoring for the top three.”

Taking second place was Waynesboro, with 342, led by Devin Smith’s 75. James Buchanan’s Caleb Reath shot an 83, Shippensburg’s Adam Maring had an 85, while Amanda Steier of Greencastle-Antrim (84) and Ella Lowry of ‘Boro (87) were the top females.

GIRLS GOLF
Trojans compete in 1st match: Chambersburg played its first-ever all-girls match Tuesday at Manada Golf Course.

Trojan ace Mary Kate Norcross shot an 83, which tied for fifth with Central Dauphin’s Anna McCormick. The other two Chambersburg players were Megan Brandt (96) and Heather Sanbower (98).

Chambersburg placed fifth as a team in the event, which included Mid Penn schools, plus Hazelton.

Lauren Ocker, Eliza Bellows and Lecuona secured the assists for Chambersburg (4-1, 2-1 MPC), which held a 16-7 margin in shots. Faith Johnson made six saves in goal.

Trojan coach Ed Franchi said, “The girls came out tonight fired up and ready to go. The energy was high and it showed in their performance, maintaining possession for most of the first half. We had 11 shots on goal in the first half, which was nice to see. It was a good win.”
