Field Hockey 9/7/18 Cardinals Open Season With a Win

Forbes Road 2 Fairfield 0

Fairfield, Pa. – The Forbes Road Field Hockey Team (1-0) opened their season with a win. But the real story wasn’t on the field, but rather who wasn’t on the field. For the first time in 42 years, long time Forbes Road Coach Carol Cline was not on the sideline. Coach Cline continues to recover from an illness that she contracted at the end of July. Interim Head Coach Mindy Horne and Interim Assistant Coach Becky Ford (both former players for Coach Cline) are filling in until that time when Coach Cline is able to return to the field.

Despite a delayed start due to lightening, Forbes Road field hockey won their season opener on the road Friday night against the Fairfield Knights. Junior forward Harlie Strait found the cage on an assist from junior Quincy McMath at the 24 minute mark into the first half. The Cardinals scored again on a penalty corner with just 1:12 left in the half. Senior forward Mara Broadwater scored the goal, assisted by junior Shelby Harnish.

Just minutes into the start of the second half, the game was once again placed on a lightning delay. Continued storms and lightning in the area resulted in the game finally being called and the victory going to Forbes.

Forbes Road had 11 shots and 6 penalty corners. The cardinal’s defense denied the Knights any shots on goal and zero penalty corners. FR senior goalie Zoe Cutchall had one clear.

Fairfield’s goalie tallied 9 saves. The Cardinals are back in action Saturday at Hempfield High School where they will play Hempfield Area at 1:00, and then, North Allegheny at 4:00.
