It was a good four-day stretch for the Shippensburg high school football team, starting last Friday.
The Greyhounds (1-0) opened their season with a 35-28 win over Dover. Then on Monday, the Shippensburg School Board approved a plan to put in a new multi-purpose stadium and track. It will be located right beside the school where the track and practice football fields are currently located.
And while Ship is riding a high to begin the season, there are plenty of areas to improve upon heading into this Friday’s non league game at West York , which fell to Central York 38-14 to open its season last week.
“We made some mistakes last week, but they are all correctable mistakes,” Ship coach Eric Foust said. “Defensively we gave up two big plays, and we messed up two punts. We gave up 28 points, but it wasn’t as bad as it looked.”
Ship gave up 418 total yards last week but 162 of them came on two big pass plays, and two other scores came on short fields after one punt was blocked and another snap on a punt was muffed.
“Special teams is something we focused on this week for sure,” Foust said. “Again, it’s easily correctable. I just think it was something we needed to spend some time on.”
On offense, the Greyhounds broke off several big plays of their own, with touchdown runs of 31, 53 and 85 yards by Adam Houser. Alex Sharrow also had touchdown runs of 53 and 37 yards.
Sophomore quarterback Zack Manning made his first start and finished 1 of 5 for 12 yards.
“Zack started his first game. He was a little nervous, but he won the game,” Foust said. “He didn’t make any mistakes and that was key in us getting a win.”
This week, Foust is expecting a similar defense that Dover showed last week, which is sure to include plenty of blitzes. West York, however, doesn’t have the same size as Dover.
“Both teams bring a lot of bodies at you but that also opens up the chance for big plays. It’s a little bit of boom or bust playing teams like this. You have a couple of plays where you get tackled for a loss, but if you stick with it, you can break off some big plays.”
Junior quarterback Corey wise will lead West York after a strong start to the season. He finished 14-for-18 last week with 172 yards and one touchdown. Ay’juan Marshall led the Bulldogs on the ground with 92 yards on 23 carries and one score. Andrew Lamanna was the leading receiver with seven catches for 100 yards and a touchdown.
Foust said, “Their running back compares to Houser in some ways, and they also have a tall receiver. They are relatively small in size compared to what we saw last week, but it should be a good test for us.”
If the Greyhounds can win their first road game of the season, it would make for an impressive seven days to start the season.
