GREENCASTLE — How to Halt a Long Losing Streak 101:
— Grab a lead early
— Take advantage of the other team’s mistakes
— Make big plays
The Chambersburg football team checked all of those items on the above list emphatically Friday night, and the result was an aced test against Greencastle-Antrim in the season opener at Kaley Field, a 48-13 victory for the Trojans.
It had been two years and 19 consecutive defeats for Chambersburg since its last win, but that’s now in the rear view mirror.
“I felt something different this year, and I felt we were ready to win tonight,” Trojan lineman Tucker Karn said. “We just came out to do our jobs, and we did them.”
Chambersburg made big plays all over the field, resulting in touchdowns for the offense and turnovers for the defense. It was just too much for the Blue Devils to overcome in Devin McCauley’s first game as a head coach.
“You can’t turn the ball over four times in the first half and win,” McCauley said. “We always want to win the turnover battle and do a good job tackling, and we didn’t do either well.”
The Trojans showed they meant business from the opening whistle. Keyshawn Jones returned the opening kickoff to the 35-yard line, then on the first play ran through a nice hole, made a couple of defenders miss and outran the secondary for a 65-yard touchdown.
“We thought we’d seen something on film and we caught them on the first play,” Chambersburg coach Mark Luther said. “The guys executed and Keyshawn hit the seam.”
Trojan defensive back Tucker Perry, who made several big hits and recovered a fumble, said, “After that first run, we knew it was going to be our game. It felt very good.”

Just two minutes later, it became a 14-0 lead. Bryce Diller recovered a G-A fumble on the Devils’ 30, and four plays later, quarterback Brady Stumbaugh found H-back Andrew Shetter in the right flat, and Shetter took it in from 14 yards out.
Greencastle got back into it with a nice drive, culminated by a 21-yard pass from Max McDowell to Adam Root.
But by halftime, Chambersburg added three more scores — a 10-yard pass from Stumbaugh to Terrell Williams, a 55-yard run straight up the middle by Kyere Morton and a 5-yard pass from Stumbaugh to Garner Funk with 0:13 left in the half to make it 35-7.
All three of those scores came after Blue Devil turnovers. Perry recovered a fumble, Kevin Lee made an outstanding catch for an interception and Keaton Morris fell on a fumble.
Luther said, “Lee had been beaten on their touchdown pass, but he bounced back and made a great play.”
Chambersburg’s second-half touchdowns came on a 48-yard pass from Stumbaugh to Williams, who stiff-armed the last defender to the turf, and a 42-yard blast by Tanner Hunt similar to Morton’s run.
Stumbaugh said he believed his team was ready to play.
“I can’t really describe it, but I could feel a lot of energy in the locker room,” he said. “We knew what we had to do and we played a full game.”
Luther said, “You hope you don’t get too high after the start we had, but then we got the fumble and kept it going. What I liked was that we finished — we knew Greencastle wouldn’t quit, so we had to finish the game.”
Jones finished with 156 yards on 17 carries, while Stumbaugh hit on 9 of 13 passes for 135 yards and four touchdowns, equaling the number he had last year. Three of those TD passes were caught by tight ends Williams and Funk.

“Having the tight ends is a plus, and they add to the run game, too,” Stumbaugh said.
“Those guys are more mature this year and it adds a different dimension,” Luther said. “I’m glad we got them involved.”
The Chambersburg defense allowed only 105 yards on the ground on 38 rushes, but McDowell did throw for 223 yards, completing 14 of 26.
“We got behind, which changed things for us,” McCauley said, “but we did some nice things to move the ball. The kids know our recipe for success, and we’ll clean things up.”
Luther said, “We got humbled in our scrimmage last week by a good team team (York), but we got to work this week. This result should show the guys that hard work does pay off. It’s a great feeling.
“The team was congratulating me for the win, but I said, it’s not me that won, it was you. You guys did the work. All we can do is put them in position to make plays, and tonight they did. It was well-executed and it should help their self-confidence.”
