SHIPPENSBURG — The opening day of the PIAA Track & Field Championships ended Friday with one area athlete bringing home a medal.
In a bit of a surprise, Chambersburg senior Derek Moore threw the shot put a personal best 53-10, easily topping his previous best (49-11.75). That throw was good enough to claim sixth place in the Boys 3A event.
Moore had finished behind teammate Brock Harmon for most of the season, but outdid his teammate Friday. Harmon, a sophomore, hit 48-3 to end up in 15th place.
In trials on the track Friday, three local athletes advanced.
Josh Booth of McConnellsburg, a senior and the defending champion in the 2A 300 hurdles, qualified for the final on Saturday. His time was 39.53 — last year he won the race in 39.11.
Greencastle-Antrim sophomore Taryn Parks, who has been battling an injury in recent weeks, posted a time of 5:05.59 to qualify for the 3A girls 1600. She is the defending state champion in that event.
Chambersburg junior Sydnie Gilbert raced to a time of 15.38 in the 3A 100 hurdles, which was not quite good enough to advance her to Saturday’s semifinals.
Also in action Friday were Chambersburg sophomore Bre’ya Clopper (pictured above) in the 300 hurdles (her 47.73 time did not qualify her to move on), and the Trojan girls 4 x 100 relay team (Gilbert, Clopper, Jacelyn Jones and Ariana Appenzellar), whose time of 49.20 beat its seed time of 49.62, but was not fast enough to move on.
