The Cumberland Valley Christian Blazers shrugged off some bad fortune because of weather and picked up a 1-0 victory over New Life Christian in a Mason-Dixon Christian Conference girls soccer quarterfinal playoff game Tuesday.

The Blazers (9-5) started a game against New Life on Monday and led 3-0 when thunderstorms caused the game to be postponed only 29 minutes into the first half. The game had to be started from scratch on Tuesday.

“League rules required us to start the game over, which was a tough pill to swallow for our team since we were dominating early in Monday’s game,” CVCS coach Paul Lundy said.

Tuesday’s game was scoreless in the first half as New Life, forced to play with only 10 players, put its best players back on defense, hoping to prevent the Blazers from scoring and then get a break or two that would lead to a close victory.

In the second half, freshman Ryleigh Timmons got free on a breakaway and was taken down in the box, leading to a penalty kick. Junior Kaitlin Provard blasted in the penalty kick at the 57-minute mark for the only scoring of the game. Sophomore goalkeeper Jalen Moats preserved the shutout with five saves.

“New Life wasn’t able to get much going on offense, but Jalen Moats and the rest of our D was able to shut down the attacks they did get going,” Lundy said. “I have always heard the saying that it is tough to beat a team three times in a season, and as it turned out we basically beat New Life four times this year (counting Monday’s abandoned game). They were a tough out and played their hearts out. I am proud of our girls for battling to the end and earning a hard-fought MDCC playoff win.”

The Blazers will travel to play No. 1 seed Shalom Christian on Thursday at 4:30 in the MDCC semifinals.

“Shalom will be a very tough opponent on Thursday, but we are looking forward to rising to the challenge,” Lundy said.
