Greencastle upends Trojans in softball, 6-4, in 10 innings

FAYETTEVILLE — The hits kept flying at Norlo Park on Monday afternoon.

The host, Chambersburg, and Greencastle-Antrim went back-and-forth, each with clutch hits, each with good defense, each with a chance to win the game several times.

In the end, the Blue Devils, as their coach Mark DeCarli said, “got in the last punch,” and went home with a 6-4 non-league softball victory in 10 innings.

For the Trojans (10-6), trying to remain in the upper tier of the District 3 Class 6A rankings, that final punch was a punch to the gut.

“We tried to tell the girls that his was like a playoff game for (Greencastle),” Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said. “And we did not match that. We didn’t even score, except for the home run, until the seventh inning.”

For Greencastle, now 8-11, the win will likely be the highlight of its season.

DeCarli said, “All season long, we’re had trouble finishing, especially with two outs. And we did today, too, but we kept after it. It shows me that with the young team we have, we have the potential to do well.”

In the end, Greencastle’s hitting prowess made the difference. While the Trojans produced 12 hits, G-A had 18.

Tied 1-1 after six innings, the Blue Devils scored twice in the top of the seventh on doubles by Bailey Martin and Olivia Remenick, and an RBI single by Molly Ronzo.

G-A pitcher Haley Lawson got the first two batters of the bottom of the seventh and had two strikes on Kara Neidigh. But Neidigh pushed a single wide of first base and Taylor Myers followed with a double. With the game on the line, Haiden Brookens ripped a base hit to right that scored both runners and tied the game 3-3.

The Devils came right back in the eighth, also with two outs, when Hannah Beeler singled and scored on Martin’s double. The Trojans then tied it when Alyssa Wenger bunted for a hit, stole second, was balked to third and came home on a sacrifice fly by Hannah Weagley.

In the 10th, with courtesy runner Taylor Appenzellar starting at second base via international rules, Adrianna Beeler cruched a double to straightaway center for an RBI, and she later scored when Hannah Beeler singled.

In the bottom of the 10th, Chambersburg got the bases loaded with one out and could not score. The final out was a line shot by Johnson that second baseman Emma DeCarli snagged.

Coach DeCarli said, “This was really a team effort. We hit the ball from top to bottom, we played good defense, a couple of kids from the JV team came up and helped, Martin made some great plays at third base and our pitcher was around the plate.”

Chambersburg was 0-for-5 with the bases loaded and stranded 13 in total.

“We needed to do better than that,” Skultety said. “We missed signs three or four times again today and we kept throwing first-pitch strikes down the middle of the plate, even when Greencastle kept swinging at the first pitch. We have to be smarter.”

NOTES: Molly Keefer slugged a home run for Chambersburg … Martin was 4-for-6 with 2 RBIs for the Devils, Hannah Beeler was 4-for-6 and Arianna Beeler was 3-for-4 … For the Trojans, Johnson and Brookens each had 3 hits … In the fifth, with the bases loaded and two outs, Chambersburg’s Mackenzie Stake stung a line drive that Martin somehow gloved at third base.
