It only took 24 hours for the wounds to heal for the James Buchanan Lady Rockets.
Fresh off a 14-0 old fashion butt-whopping Wednesday, put on by West Perry, the Lady Rockets rebounded the only way they knew how – put it behind them and get a win.
Riding the arm of Jenna Mongold and a clutch hit from lone senior Carly Caron, the Lady Rockets defeated Waynesboro 4-0 on Thursday in a key Mid Penn Colonial Division game.
“This was a big game for us to win,” JB coach Troy Pittman said. “We have another game tomorrow which makes 5 games in 5 days. The team is playing well and I’m proud of all the girls.”
Mongold held Waynesboro (12-3) to 4 hits and struck out 6. The Maidens did not have a runner reach third base.
“Jenna did a good job hitting her spots and the defense played well,” Pittman said.
After leaving the bases loaded in the first and second innings, JB (10-4) finally broke through with 3 runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Maddie Bailey and Mongold drew consecutive walks and were moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Maria Burkett. Caron then smoked a ground ball off the shortstops’ glove to score Bailey and Mongold. Caron then stole second and third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Paige Doyle.
“Carly’s came up big and played hard on Senior Day,” Pittman said. “That third run was big to score. It gave us a little breathing room because Waynesboro’s lineup is tough and can score runs quickly.”
Mongold helped her own cause with an RBI single in the sixth.
The Lady Rockets play at Susquehanna Township on Friday. Next Saturday, May 12, JB plays at Shippensburg at 11 a.m. If the Lady Rockets win they will be Colonial co-champions with the Lady Hounds. A victory by Ship will give it the outright title.
