NEWVILLE — Chambersburg emerged from the Big Spring Softball Tournament on Saturday as the second-place finisher, but the Trojans made coach Chris Skultety very happy.
Chambersburg beat South Western 13-8 in its opener, battled through a rain delay and change of fields to top State College 13-8 in the semifinals, then suffered a 5-2 loss to Exeter Township, despite out-hitting the Eagles, 8-7.
Trojan coach Chris Skultety said, “I am really proud of how the girls battled adversity throughout the day. We had a fog delay to start the day, then a rain delay and had to change fields after that, and then we had to play the championship game right after the semifinal, with (Exeter) having a two-hour break.”
Against South Western, Chambersburg took a 5-0 lead, but the Mustangs got it back to 5-3 before the Trojans added a 3-run top of the seventh.
Mackenzie Stake earned the win with 6 innings of scoreless pitching, yielding 3 hits and striking out 6. Alyssa Wenger was 2-for-2, Kirsten Johnson was 2-for-4 and Brooklyn Miller hit a 2-run double.
Miller had a huge game against State College. She was the winning pitcher, and went 3-for-3, with a 2-run single and a home run for 3 RBIs. Taylor Myers knocked in 3 runs, Kara Neidigh was 2-for-4 and Neidigh, Hannah Weagley and Haiden Brookens each had 2 RBIs.
The Trojans led 7-0, but the Little Lions battled back to within 8-5. A five-run fifth sealed the deal, as Chambersburg got RBIs from Myers, Johnson and Brynn Schoenberger. The game lasted only 5 innings.
In the final vs. Exeter, Stake pitched 4 innings and allowed only 5 hits and no walks. But the Eagles touched her for a pair of home runs in a 4-run third inning.
For Chambersburg (8-4), Myers did most of the damage, going 3-for-4 with a double, triple and a run batted in. Neidigh was 2-for-3.
Skultety said, “My girls showed a lot of heart and this young group learned a lot of valuable lessons today. They are starting to really get it and improve as a whole. Once it all clicks, we are going to be very tough to beat.
“It was a great day for us, even though the final outcome was a little disappointing.”
