JB softball knocks off Greencastle

Sparked by a 3-run fifth inning the James Buchanan Lady Rockets softball team avenged its only loss of the season Friday.

The Rockets erased a 2-0 deficit and came back to knock off Greencastle-Antrim 4-2 in a Mid Penn Colonial Division game.

G-A (4-5, 2-3 MPC) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth behind solo homers by Hannah Beeler, who had 3 of the Blue Devils 7 hits, and Baylee Schaeffer.

In the bottom of the fourth JB (5-1, 4-1 MPC) cut the deficit to 2-1 when Maria Burkett scored Maddie Bailey from second base on a fielder’s choice.

“Maddie really hustled on that play,” JB coach Troy Pittman said. “She really hustled from second. We work on base running and hustling every day and it helped to score that run. That was a big run for us, seizing the momentum.”

Then in the bottom of the fifth the Lady Rockets charged ahead. Paige Doyle led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Grace Amsley.  Kyrstin Nichols reached on a fielders choice and then 2 batters later, with 2 outs, Alyssa Blair ripped a double to put JB ahead 3-2. Bailey added a bloop RBI single to right to increase the lead to 4-2.

Lizzie Pittman earned the victory for JB, going 6 innings, scattering 7 hits and struck out 2. Jenna Mongold got the save by getting the last 3 outs of the game.

“I was an extremely happy coach and proud father for Lizzie,” Troy Pittman said. “She has been a big boost early in the season as Jenna works her way back into pitching shape (returning from an arm injury). I’m happy for JB softball. Greencastle always has a quality club and to get a win against them is big for us.”

JB hosts Big Spring on Tuesday at 4:30 in its next game.
