CRESAPTOWN, Md. – The Cumberland Valley Christian Blazers scored four straight goals to wipe out a 2-1 deficit and went on to defeat Calvary Christian 5-2 Tuesday in a snow-hampered Mason-Dixon Christian Conference girls soccer game.

“We played for the second time this season in a fairly heavy snow shower for the entire game, and the field was very muddy due to the rain on Sunday night,” CVCS coach Paul Lundy said. “Footing was a little difficult, but I am pleased with how the team played despite the elements.”

Kaitlin Provard scored three goals for the Blazers (4-2, 3-2 MDCC), the latter two tying the game late in the first half and putting the Blazers ahead to stay 13 minutes into the second half. Taylor Heck and Ryleigh Timmons added goals later in the second half. Isabel Beard, Laurel Reitz and Maddie Eberly provided assists, and goalkeeper Jalen Moats made 11 saves.

With about 3 1/2 minutes remaining in the first half, Calvary slipped a striker past the defense and had a 1-on-1 with Moats, who stuffed the shot and quickly returned the ball upfield. Provard tracked it down and went the opposite way for the goal that evened the score.

“That save by Jalen really turned momentum and we were able to head into halftime tied instead of down 3-1, which could have been hard to recover from,” Lundy said. “Taylor Heck’s strong strike and finish with 24 minutes remaining in the game put us up two goals, and Calvary didn’t have enough energy to mount a comeback after that point. Ryleigh Timmons was finally able to break free from CCA’s pesky defense and find the back of the net with about 10 minutes to play.”
