2 Franklin County 2A swimmers gain medals

LEWISBURG — Shippensburg’s Sam Nonemaker and James Buchanan’s Nick Garbinski earned medals Friday during the first day of Class 2A boys competition at the PIAA Swimming & Diving Championships at Bucknell University.

Nonemaker, a senior, swam a 1:44.24 in the prelims of the 200 freestyle, which was the eighth-best time, but bettered that mark in the final (1:43.63) to claim sixth place.

Garbinski, also a senior, was in seventh place in the both the prelims (21.70) and the final (21.62) of the 50 freestyle race.

Also in 2A boys, the Greyhounds’ 200 freestyle team placed 16th with a time of 1:31.78. The team included Nonemaker, Caleb Eveland, Kaiden Estep and Elijah Zinn.

In 2A girls, JB’s Rachel Kimmel and Ship’s Madison Osanitsch narrowly missed reaching the finals.

Osanitsch had the ninth-best prelim time in the 200 free (1:57.91), and ended up 10th with a 1:56.65 in the consolation final. Kimmel’s time of 2:11.79 was 10th-best in the 200 IM prelims, and her finals time of 2:09.49 earned her a first-place finish in the consolation race, good for ninth overall.

Also in the 2A prelims, Ship’s Julia Strine swam a school-record time of 24.70 to finish 17th, and teammate Makenna Morris finished 18th in the 200 IM in 2:13.55.

In relays, the Lady Hounds took 13th in the 200 free relay in 1:41.32, with a team of Strine, Osanitsch, Teddi Powell and Morris, and the Rockets’ 200 medley relay team of Annaleisse Hissong, Rachel Kimmel, Sarah Kimmel and Harley Rife was 18th in 1:53.88.

The Class 2A competition concludes Saturday at Bucknell.
