LEWISBURG — The Chambersburg boys swimming team closed out its run at the PIAA Swimming and Diving Championships by earning a pair of medals on Thursday evening.
Avery Barley (pictured above) claimed fifth place in the 100 backstroke and Jacob Greenwood placed seventh in the 500 freestyle in the Class 3A meet.
Both are juniors who also took home state medals last year in those events — Barley was second and Greenwood placed sixth.
The points gained by the duo enabled Chambersburg to finish in 14th place in the state in the team standings with 60.5 points. The Trojans were the second-highest District 3 team behind only Wilson (10th place), behind runaway winner North Allegheny, which scored 301 to win by 111 points.
Barley swam a time of 49.91 in the morning prelims, which was the second-best time. In the finals, however, he couldn’t match that time, posting 50.21. The winner was Brendan Burns of Conestoga (46.93).

In the 500 free, the prelim time of 4:32.76 by Greenwood (pictured above) was the fourth-best. In the finals, his time fell off to 4:35.45 and he dropped to seventh. The winner, Rick Minh of North Allegheny posted a time of 4:24.02.
The Trojans also competed in the 400 freestyle relay, but had the 18th-best time (3:14.05) in the morning prelims, so did not advance to the evening races. That team consisted of sophomore C.J. Pong, freshman Aiden McMillen, Barley and Greenwood.
