The PIAA Swimming & Diving Championships get under Wednesday morning at Bucknell University, and four athletes from Franklin County enter the competition with seeds in the top five.
In Class 3A boys, Chambersburg’s Avery Barley is seeded No. 3 with his time of 49.53. He swam 49.65 and placed second last year, behind Conestoga’s Brendan Burns, who is the top seed at 48.04.
James Buchanan’s Rachel Kimmel picked up the No. 2 seed in the Class AA girls 100 breaststroke, behind Annie O’Dare of Gwynedd Mercy (1:02.71). Kimmel’s seed time is 1:03.53, compared to her time last year of 1:05.65, which gave her seventh place.
In Class 2A boys, JB’s Nick Garbinski gained the No. 4 seed in the breaststroke with a time of 58.42. The best time is 57.71. Shippensburg’s Sam Nonemaker is No. 5 in the 100 freestyle; his time is 46.77 compared to the top time of 45.17.
Chambersburg’s Jacob Greenwood placed sixth in the 200 and 500 free events last year. This year he enters as the No. 10 seed in both events. Both of his 2017 swims at states were faster than his seed times of this year.
Trojan diver Nick Cover is listed as the No. 7 seed with his total of 511.50 points. A year ago he scored 465.35 and placed fifth. The top seed this year has scored 606.10.
In Class 2A girls, Kimmel is also seeded ninth in the 200 IM (she took 24th last year) and Ship’s Madison Osanitsch is listed as No. 9 in the 200 free (she was 28th last year).
Nonemaker grabbed a No. 6 seed in the 200 free; he placed 28th in that event last year, while Garbinski is a seventh seed in the 50 free, an event he placed 11th in last year.
The competition begins with 3A boys diving and swimming on Wednesday, 3A boys swimming is Thursday, and 2A swimming is held Friday and Saturday.
