NEW KINGSTOWN — Chambersburg’s Avery Barley (pictured above) and Rachel Kimmel of James Buchanan picked up gold medals as the District 3 Swimming Championships concluded Saturday at Cumberland Valley H.S.
Barley swam the boys Class 3A 100 backstroke in 49.53 to finish first, beating his qualifying time of 49.89.
In the girls Class 2A 100 breaststroke, Kimmel timed out in 1:03.53, more than 3 seconds better than her seed time, to earn gold.
Chambersburg ended up placing third in the 3A team race with 173 points, behind Wilson (356) and Cumberland Valley (199.5).
In other races Saturday, the Trojans’ Jacob Greenwood took third in the 500 freestyle in 4:36.89, C.J. Pong was seventh in the 100 backstroke (52.75) and the 400 freestyle relay team — Pong, Aiden McMillen, Barley and Greenwood — was third in 3:11.86.
In 2A girls, Shippensburg finished in fourth place in the team race with 174 points, and JB took sixth with 103.
The Lady Hounds’ Madison Osanitsch placed third in the 100 backstroke in 59.40 and Julia Strine was fourth in the breaststroke (1:07.01). The Rockets’ Annaleisse Hissong took 10th in the backstroke (1:02.53) and Megan Beam of Greencastle-Antrim took 11th in the 100 free (55.62).
Ship’s 400 free relay team of Strine, Osanitsch, Madelyn Facchinei and Makenna Morris placed fourth in 3:40.0.
Shippensburg (164) finished sixth in the 2A boys standings and James Buchanan (102) was ninth.
The Hounds’ Sam Nonemaker took second in the 100 free, posting a time of 46.77, and teammate Elijah Zinn was seventh (49.28). The Ship team of Zinn, Calen Eveland, Kaiden Estep and Nonemaker placed fifth in the 400 free relay in 3:21.77.
For JB, Nick Garbinski was a runner-up in the breaststroke, in a time of 58.42. The Rockets’ Austin Sheppard was eighth in the backstroke in 56.93.
