County has 1 champion during 1st day of District 3 swimming

NEW KINGSTOWN — Shippensburg’s Madison Osanitsch was seeded No. 1 in the 200 freestyle in Class 2A girls of the District 3 Swimming Championships, and that’s exactly where she finished.

Osanitsch swam a time of 1:57.58, .04 off her best of the season, to earn the gold medal Friday afternoon at Cumberland Valley H.S.

Competition resumes Saturday at noon.

For the Chambersburg boys, hoping to be in the race for a team title in Class 3A, two of its three seeds finished one place back of their seed time.

Jacob Greenwood swam a time of 1:41.80, but was edged out of first place by Muhlenberg’s Roanoke Shirk (1:40.23), the top seed. Teammate Aiden McMillen was 20th in 1:49.20.

Also, C.J. Pong placed seventh in the 200 IM (1:57.51), and the 200 medley relay team of Michael Johnson, Avery Barley, Pong and Greenwood took fifth in 1:37.50.

Ship’s girls had four other top-10 finishes in addition to Osanitsch. The 200 freestyle relay team of Julia Strine, Osanitsch, Teddi Powell and Makenna Morris swam a school record time of 1:41.81 to place third.

Also, Strine was seventh in the 50 free (25.02) and Morris placed ninth in the 200 IM (2:15.47) and 100 butterfly (1:01.42).

For James Buchanan, Rachel Kimmel was the runner-up in the 200 IM with a time of 2:11.36. The Rockets’ 200 medley relay team was fourth in 1:53.57, and the 200 free relay team was eighth in 1:45.58.

In Class 2A boys, JB’s Nick Garbinski was third in the 50 free (21.42), and Ship’s Sam Nonemaker placed third in the 200 free (1:43.04).

Also for the Greyhounds, Elijah Zinn was eighth in the 50 free (22.75), Caleb Eveland was ninth in the 100 fly (56.45) and the 200 free relay team of Eveland, Kaiden Estep, Zinn and Nonemaker was fifth in 1:31.69.

For the Rockets, the 200 medley relay team was fifth in 1:43.09 and the 200 free team was eighth in 1:33.36.
