Greenwood, Barley win MPC titles for Trojans

NEW KINGSTOWN — Victories by Jacob Greenwood and Avery Barley on Saturday afternoon helped the Chambersburg boys swim team tie for fourth in the team standings at the Mid Penn Conference championships.

The Trojans scored 204 points to tie with Palmyra behind State College (398), Cumberland Valley (315) and Hershey (219).

Barley won the 100 backstroke in a time of 49.89, while Greenwood captured the 500 freestyle in 4:35.83 for his second win of the meet. Also, the Chambersburg 400 free relay team of C.J. Pong, Aiden McMillen, Barley and Greenwood swam a time of 3:14.34 to place third. That time set a school record.

In the 100 free, Shippensburg’s Sam Nonemaker placed fifth in 47.99, followed in sixth by Nick Garbinski of James Buchanan in 48.11.

In the girls competition, Shippensburg took seventh place, compiling 129 points. Hershey ran away with the title, scoring 647, nearly 400 more than the runner-up.

The Lady Hounds got a pair of fourth-place finishes — Julia Strine in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.14) and Madison Osanitsch in the 100 backstroke (1:00.18).

Also, Waynesboro’s Lauren Wetzel placed in two events — fifth in the backstroke (1:00.24) and eighth in the 100 free (55.75).

Next up for the swimmers is the District 3 Championships on March 2-3.
