Chambersburg boys down CV by 11

CHAMBERSBURG — It was certainly a less stressful final three minutes for the Chambersburg boys basketball team Friday night.

The Trojans sank 9 of 12 free throws in the final quarter and 19 of 26 for the game to capture a 57-46 Mid Penn Commonwealth victory over Cumberland Valley at CASHS Field House.

Chambersburg’s fourth straight win increases its record to 9-2 (4-2 MPC), with a Saturday afternoon (2 o’clock) game vs. a good Donegal team looming.

In addition to the good free throw shooting, the Trojans played fine defense, holding the Eagles (5-8, 3-3 MPC) more than 10 points below their season scoring average.

“We were fairly solid on defense, although we over-committed some in the first half,” Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said. “We adjusted to what they were doing better in the second half and were able to force some turnovers.”

CV turned the ball over seven times in the fourth period, which was a big help to the Trojans, because the Eagles’ press caused Chambersburg to make seven turnovers, too — most of them in about a minute-and-a-half stretch midway through the quarter. Then they settled down, beat the press and hit their shots at the line.

Shreffler said, “We did a better job of attacking their pressure and looking for opportunities to do some scoring against it.”

Joel Torres made an uncontested layup at the end of a CV turnover, and on the next possession, Cade Brindle converted on a twisting, heavily-guarded reverse layup to give the Trojans a 48-40 lead and they closed it out with foul shots from that point on.

Seth Brouse was 6-for-6 at the stripe in the final three minutes.

“CV puts pressure on you at both ends with their quickness,” Shreffler said, “but I think we played well at times against that pace.”

Torres received plenty of good entry passes and hit a high percentage of shots to lead the Trojans with 19 points. Brouse and Brindle each scored 9, wile Dylan Buzalka led CV with 11.
