Chambersburg boys soccer advances

CHAMBERSBURG — The difference, according to Chambersburg boys soccer coach Corey Grove, was simple: “We finished one.”

That was a tidy and accurate statement to sum up the Trojans’ 1-0 victory over Manheim Township on Tuesday night at Trojan Stadium in a District 3 Class 4A first-round playoff game.

Chambersburg (11-3-4), the No. 7 seed, will face a surprising and familiar foe in the quarterfinals. Central Dauphin (8-9-1) upset No. 2 seed Elizabethtown 2-0 in the first round to set up an all-Mid Penn Commonwealth matchup, which will be 3:30 on Saturday at Northeastern H.S.

The one finish Tuesday came less than five minutes into the second half.

The Trojans developed a quick counter attack and got the ball to Chuy Munoz on the right side of the midfield area. He carried it toward the Blue Streaks’ defense, then sent a diagonal pass into the middle to Griffin Redding.

Redding one-timed a pass back to his right to Munoz, who found himself bearing in on MT goalkeeper Joshua Orndorff. Before Orndorff could commit, Munoz took a low, hard shot that got under Orndorff and zipped into the far side of the goal.

“We knew they were going to be a good team,” Grove said. “For the most part the first half was back and forth, but in the first 10 minutes of the second half we did better with possession in the middle of the field and that led to the goal.”

The Trojans had several chances to score early when several long throw-ins by Amin Butler created danger, including one that was kicked away off the goal line by Blue Streak defender Kyle Lando.

Township striker Andrea DiSomma was a handful for the Chambersburg defense and he had a couple of close calls.

After the goal, Chambersburg switched their formation to a more defensive 5-3-2 to protect the lead. While the Trojans did not concede a goal, Manheim Twp. had the better of possession in the final 25 minutes of the game and DiSomma twice had opportunities on bouncing balls that he couldn’t quite get a good strike on.

Grove said, “For the most part, in the last 20 minutes we were hanging on. A couple of times we let the ball bounce way too close to the six and we were fortunate they didn’t score on them.”
