District 3, Class 4A first round: Cumberland Valley 3, Chambersburg 0. The Trojans got off to a rugged start — giving up two goals in the first 15 minutes — and could not catch up to the No. 1-seeded Eagles.
“We looked a little shell-shocked to be on this stage,” Trojan coach Ed Franchi said. “But we played better and tougher after that. We had more possession and we had some good chances. Gabby (Lecuona) was just a little high and wide on one shot and we had a few crosses that weren’t finished.”
Chambersburg goalkeeper Caitlin Masaberg made several good saves to keep the score where it was. CV’s final goal came three minutes into the second half.
“Their first goal came after a silly mistake,” Franchi said, “but after that the defense didn’t allow a lot of good chances to CV.”
The Trojans finished 8-11, but the fact that they qualified for districts was a big accomplishment, especially considering that the record was 4-10 at one point.
“I’m very proud of them,” Franchi said. “They played hard all year and didn’t give up. When we were 4-10, I told them if we could win out we might get in the playoffs and they went out and did it.
“In this program in general, I think it had become too comfortable with losing. We had to change that and I think the girls are starting to believe in themselves more.”
