YORK — Chambersburg’s two state qualifiers in golf will need a big day Tuesday to get in contention for a medal.
On the first day of the PIAA Golf Championships at Heritage Hills in York, junior Mary Kate Norcross is in ninth place in a field of 18 players in Class AAA girls, while junior Karsen Rush is tied with one other golfer for 19th in a 36-player field in Class AAA boys.
Norcross shot 84, with nines of 41 and 43, for a 12-over par score on the demanding layout. She trails leader Ellen Wager of Manheim Township by 12 strokes.
She carded a pair of birdies, on the par 5 No. 2 and the par 3 No. 8. But she had four double bogeys and managed only six pars.
Rush shot a 7-over par 78, carding 40 on the front and 38 on the back. His only birdie came on No. 7, a par 5, but he was 2-over on the par 5s for the day. He had four bogeys and two doubles on his scorecard.
The leader is Jimmy Myers of Pittsburgh Central Catholic, who fired a 1-under 71.
