The Frederick (Md.) Cadets were hungry for a win and proved just how hungry to the James Buchanan Rockets.
The Cadets spotted James Buchanan an early 13-0 lead before scoring 39 straight points to hand the Rockets a 42-27 loss in their 2017 Homecoming football game.
Frederick (1-5), which snapped an 11-game losing streak, scored 3 touchdowns in the second quarter, added 2 more touchdowns and a field goal in the third quarter to take over a game that looked to be all Rockets early on.
“We couldn’t stop the bleeding and they got rolling,” JB coach Andy Stoner said. “They took it to us. Their offensive line took it to our defensive line and their defensive line took it to our offensive line.”
James Buchanan (1-5) built its lead behind a 64-yard TD pass from Sebastian Wise to Caden Stoner and an 8-yard scoring run from Owen Stoner, but that would be the Rockets only points until 10:35 left in the game when Wise hooked up with Clay Sanders for a 39-yard TD strike.
After the Owen Stoner score it was all Frederick for the next 2 quarters. Most notably because the Cadets sealed the Rockets fate by spreading the JB defense out with their vertical passing game.
Before Kisaye Barnes’ 55-yard TD pass to Ean Davis, which gave Frederick its first lead 15-13, the Rockets were putting 7 and 8 defenders near the line of scrimmage, but after that scoring play JB had to try to defend the pass which allowed Frederick to turn to its running game, which featured slasher Deondre Boyce, who finished with 169 yards and 3 TDs.
And when JB did slow Boyce down the Cadets turned back to the arm of Barnes, who finished 10-of-17 for 160 yards and 2 TDs. Barnes also added 75 yards on the ground.
“We knew their quarterback was mobile, but he took it to another level tonight,” Andy Stoner said. “We faced some adversity and didn’t handle it very well. We were tired and lifeless in the second and third quarters.”
Another woe for the Rockets was on special teams where they couldn’t recover two Frederick pooch kickoffs that led to 10 points.
The first was after Davis’ score when the Cadets recovered the ensuing kickoff at the JB 31 and 3 players later Barnes connected with Deon Pierce for a 23-yard TD score. The second came after a Boyce 4-yard scoring run. Again the Cadets recovered the kickoff and 6 plays later Noah Stadelmann drilled a 34-yard field goal.
On a positive note, Wise finished with a career-high 251 yards passing and 3 TDs. Freshman Caden Stoner caught 3 passes for 119 yards and Sanders also hauled in 3 passes for 84 yards.
