3 Franklin Co. golfers advance

YORK — Three golfers from Franklin County — all from Chambersburg — made it to the second day of the District 3 Golf Championships after round one Friday at Briarwood Golf Club.

In Class AAA boys, the Trojans’ Karsen Rush shot a 3-over par 75 and is tied for 12th, while teammate Grayson Hopple carded a 78 to tie for 21st. The top 32 made the cut and the top 16 finishers Saturday will advance to the PIAA Eastern Regional at Golden Oaks on Oct. 16.

Rush, uncharacteristically, did not put any birdies on his card — he had 15 pars and three bogeys. Hopple managed a birdie on the No. 9 hole. The leader is Central York’s Joe Parrani, who put up an impressive 5-under 67.

In girls AAA, Chambersburg’s Mary Kate Norcross shot a 77, which was 7-over par, and is tied for fifth place. She is three shots back of leader Kendal Abrams of Susquehannock. Norcross had a double bogey and a triple, but a birdie on No. 18 helped her cause. The top eight finishers Saturday advance to regionals.

Also in girls, Greencastle-Antrim’s Amanda Steier shot 86 and James Buchanan’s Claire Alfree had a 98. Both missed the cut.

In boys play, Chambersburg’s Spencer Rajtik (83) and Waynesboro’s Devin Smith (87) were not able to beat the cut.
