Now that the monkey is off James Buchanan’s back, can it now officially attain a win streak?
The Rockets certainly hope so as they host the Frederick (Md.) Cadets in a non-league game Friday at 7 p.m.
Last Friday’s 30-6 win over Clear Spring (Md.) was the first of the season for JB (1-4) and snapped a 25-game losing streak which dated back to to Week 9 of the 2014 season when it defeated Shippensburg 14-0.
It’s been a little longer since there’s been a football win streak in Mercersburg though. You have to go back to Week 3 & 4 of the 2013 season when JB defeated Camp Hill and Waynesboro.
“We just need to continue doing the same good things we did last week,” JB coach Andy Stoner said. “It should be a good game Friday. Frederick has a nice team and I don’t know how they haven’t won.”
Frederick, which has lost 11 straight, comes into the game 0-5, including last week’s 54-0 loss to Smithsburg (Md.). The Cadets top players are quarterback Kisaye Barnes and running back Deondre Boyce. Boyce leads Frederick with 4 rushing TDs.
“They will run a little of I, Wing-T and Spread,” Stoner said. “The quarterback is athletic. We have to continue to be aggressive, gang tackle and maintain our gaps on defense.”
Stoner would also like to see the Rocket offense continue to roll like it did last week. In that game fullback Owen Stoner rushed for 310 yards and 4 touchdowns.
“We’ve added a couple new wrinkles so we’ll see what happens,” Andy Stoner said. “It would be nice to get the passing game going to keep their defense honest. It’s going to take a total team effort to get another win.”
