Hurley came into the Class 3A girls discus competition with the fifth-best qualifying throw of 121-0. During the event Saturday morning, she hit a throw of 122-1 on her fourth attempt to put her in fifth place, and that’s where she finished.

Showing good consistency in the competition, Hurley’s throws went 115-8, 109-2, 113-4, 122-1, 106-8 and 115-0. The winning throw of 138-8 came from Genesis Castro of McCaskey.

“Bailey had a great group of throws here in a very competitive environment,” Blue Devil coach Devin McCauley said. “She has worked hard to get to this point. I’m looking forward to seeing her grow in the next couple of years.”

In the boys 3A discus, Shippensburg junior Derek Lynch produced a throw of 150-5 on his first attempt, then fouled on the next two and he ended up in 11th place.

Also in girls 3A, Claire Paci of Greencastle ran her final PIAA race and took 21st in the 3200 with a time of 11:13.64. The four-year Blue Devil star, headed to the University of Connecticut, won four PIAA medals — second in the 1600 and 3200 in 2022 and eighth in the 1600 and fourth in the 3200 as a freshman in 20121.

For Chambersburg’s boys, Owen Shrader placed 22nd in the 800 run in a time of 2:00.77. He also anchored the 4 x 800 relay team, which also included Ari Snyder, Kaden Rife and Liam Kirkpatrick, to a 27th-place finish in 8:22.54.
