Franklin County unbeaten in District 3 baseball, softball

The District 3 baseball and softball tournaments have a heavy Franklin County presence this spring, with three baseball teams and three softball teams that qualified for the playoffs.

So far, those teams have combined to go 7-0.

In baseball, James Buchanan has reached the semifinals in Class 4A. The No. 4 Rockets (14-6) had a bye in the first round, then defeated Berks Catholic 10-8 in the quarterfinals Monday.

The Rockets will host a semifinal game on Thursday at 4:30 against No. 8 Elco (13-9), which crushed No. 1 seed Bermudian Springs 12-1 on Monday

In Class 5A, Shippensburg (17-4), the No. 6 seed, has reached the semifinals, which will be played at Mechanicsburg’s Memorial Park at 4:30 Thursday. The Wildcats (17-3-1), the No. 2 seed, beat Muhlenberg 9-6 Monday.

In the first round last Friday, the Greyhounds pulled out a 3-2 win over 13 innings over Gettysburg. Ship has already qualified for the PIAA Tournament.

Also qualified for states is Waynesboro in Class 6A. The No. 7 Indians (15-5) will play in the semifinals on Thursday at 4:30 at No. 3 Hempfield (16-5), which edged Penn Manor 4-3 Monday.

In the first round Friday, Waynesboro nipped Cumberland Valley 1-0. ‘Boro came back to pin a 6-2 loss on No. 2 Red Lion on Monday.

In Class 5A softball, Greencastle-Antrim and Shippensburg won first-round games Monday. G-A crushed Hershey 13-1 and the fifth-seeded Blue Devils (16-5) will play at No. 4 Mechanicsburg (17-4) on Thursday at 4:30.

Shippensburg (12-8), the No. 14 seed, upset No. 3 Northern York — the defending state champion — 4-3 on Monday. Cora Chamberlin hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh for Ship, and Rylie Mullen tossed a four-hitter. The Greyhounds will play No. 6 Exeter Township (17-4) on Thursday at 4:30 in an away quarterfinal game.

Chambersburg, the No. 2 seed in Class 6A, opens the playoffs with a quarterfinal game at Norlo Park at 4:30 on Thursday. The Trojans (16-3) will play No. 7 seed Carlisle (14-6-1), which beat Northeastern 12-6 Monday.
