GREENCASTLE — Greencastle-Antrim completed its District 3 Class 5A resume on Tuesday afternoon.
The Blue Devils handed New Oxford a 9-3 defeat thanks to an 8-run explosion in the sixth inning that erased a 3-1 lead by the Colonials and handed Greencastle third place in the district playoffs.
G-A (20-3) will play the District 1 champion in a first-round game of the PIAA Tournament on Monday. The D-1 final is scheduled to be played Wednesday night.
“It doesn’t matter that we scored almost all of our runs in one inning; all that matters this time of year is that we won,” G-A coach Eric Shaner said.
“We had some disappointing at-bats early, but then we got it going pretty good. Noah Shifflett came off the bench and helped get our energy going.”
In the sixth, Shifflett led off as a pinch-hitter and knocked a base hit into left field. After two consecutive outs, the dam broke.
Landon Bishop singled and a hit by Bryce Davidson brought in the first run. Andrew Weaver walked to load the bases and Cam Rakaczewski was hit by a pitch to tie the score at 3-3.
Nolan Sullivan then ripped a double to right field that cleared the bases and put G-A on top for good. After a single by Avery Horst, Manny Brookens tripled to right field to plate another two runs.
A ground single to left by Bo Brookens scored the final run of the inning.
“We need to take each at-bat like we should,” Shaner said. “When we do, it works. You put a few good at-bats together, then sometimes it snowballs and gets it rolling down the hill.”
Jaxson Bostick drew the pitching assignment for Greencastle. He threw 6 innings of 5-hit ball, allowing 3 runs, walking 2 and striking out 5.
“Bostick grinded today. He kept us in the game before we started hitting,” Shaner said.
Horst then entered to pitch the seventh and set the Colonials (15-9) down 1-2-3 to end the game.
NOTES: Bishop and Bo Brookens each had a pair of hits for the Blue Devils … Every player in the G-A lineup produced a hit except one … Bostick is now 6-0 … Lampeter-Strasburg edged Lower Dauphin 6-5 on Monday to win the 5A title.
