SOFTBALL
Chambersburg 14, Cedar Cliff 3: Two big innings were quite useful for the Trojans, who dispensed of the Colts in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game Wednesday afternoon at Norlo Park.
Chambersburg (6-1, 5-1 MPC) put up 6 runs in the bottom of the first inning, then blew the game up with an 8-spot in the fourth inning. The game ended in 5 innings.
“The girls did a nice job answering the bell in the first inning after we gave up a run to start the game,” Trojan coach Chris Skultety said. “Then I thought we did a great job of adjusting in our second and third at-bats to blow the game open.”
Addy Gsell was 2-for-3 for Chambersburg and drove in 5 runs, while Kendall Flory hit the team’s first home run of the season, a grand slam in the first inning.
In the first, Erissa Varner singled and scored later on a sac fly by Gsell. An error, a walk and a hit loaded the bases for Flory, who blasted her shot to left field. Chambersburg tacked on a sixth run on hits by Ashley Mitchell and Piper Jones and a grounder by Josey Snavely.
Snavely and Varner singled to start the big uprising in the fourth and both were chased home by Gsell’s double to left field. RBI hits by Marley Onomastico, Kylee Perry and Hensley Brookens and an error scored runs, and then another 2-RBI double to left by Gsell closed the scoring.
Skultety said, “Gsell had a nice day at the plate and continues to be consistent at the top of the lineup, and Kendall’s grand slam — her first varsity homer — gave us some breathing room early. It was cool that everybody in the lineup that batted today had a hit.”
Issie Slimmer went 4 innings for the win, giving up a run, 4 hits and no walks, striking out 8. Sanay Jones cleaned up in the final inning, with 2 unearned runs scoring.
BASEBALL
Chambersburg 3, Cedar Cliff 2: Trailing 2-0, the Trojans put up 3 runs in the top of the fifth inning Wednesday afternoon and pitcher Ryne Mills made them count, finishing off a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory over the defending state champion Colts.
Aiden Appleby led off the fifth for Chambersburg (8-1, 5-1 MPC) with a single and moved up when Devon Nalewak’s line drive to the second baseman was misplayed. After a wild pitch, Konner McMullen scored Appleby with a sacrifice fly.
A ground ball hit by Mills was booted at shortstop and Nalewak scored to tie the game 2-2. Aaron Vasquez then delivered a 2-strike, 2-out single to left to score the go-ahead run.
Trojan coach Scott Folmar said, “That’s one of the things we’ve done well — two-out RBIs — and Aaron’s hit was the difference today. We took a chance and sent the runner and the throw was a little off-line.”
Mills (3-0) did the rest, holding the Colts (2-5, 2-5 MPC) at bay for the final 3 innings, putting them down 1-2-3 in the sixth and seventh innings. For the game, Mills allowed 3 hits, 2 earned runs, 2 walks and 3 strikeouts.
Folmar said, “He gave up a couple of hard hits and a run in the first, but he really settled in and did a phenomenal job. He was very efficient (78 pitches in 7 innings), especially later in the game. The defense is not making spectacular plays, but we’re making the ones we should.”
BOYS TENNIS
Chambersburg 3, Central Dauphin East 2: The Trojans picked up victories in both doubles matches to pull out a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory Wednesday afternoon over the Panthers in Colonial Park.
At No. 2 doubles, Seth Walter and Nate Weis of Chambersburg (4-5, 1-3 MPC) had a relatively easy time beating their opponents, but at No. 1, Caden Brenize and Drew Staley had to work extra to produce a tight 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Timmy Pitzner and Saying Rai.
The other point scored came at No. 1 singles, where Anton Winter rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win, helping the Trojans end a 3-match losing skid.
Eli Keeler fell 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 and Micah Detweiler dropped a close one, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3.
