BASEBALL
Chambersburg 2, Central Dauphin 0: Ryne Mills nearly finished off a 2-hit shutout, but it was enough to send the Trojans to a victory over the Rams to open their Mid Penn Commonwealth schedule with a game at Greene Township Park on Wednesday afternoon.
Mills pitched 6.2 innings, but his pitch count expired after giving up a 2-out walk in the top of the seventh inning. Devon Nalewak relieved and delivered a 3-pitch strikeout to end the game.
Mills ended up giving up 2 hits, walked 4 and fanned 3.
Chambersburg coach Scott Folmar said, “Mills was just outstanding today; we’ll just hope to get that four-walk total down a little as the season goes on. They only had one hit that was hit hard. It’s not easy to come in like Nalewak did in the seventh, but he did his job.”
The Trojans (2-0, 1-0 MPC) nicked CD pitcher Nick Tirado for only 5 hits, but bunched them, scoring single runs in the third and fifth innings.
Konner McMullen led off the third with a base hit and Hayden Lyons sacrificed him to second. Mills promptly doubled to left field to drive him in.
In the fifth, McMullen drew a one-out walk. After an out, Mills, who 2-for-3, singled him to second. Aaron Vasquez then doubled to left to score McMullen, although Mills was thrown out at home on the play.
Folmar said, “We got another huge two-out RBI hit today. We’ve played in so many close games over the last several years and that’s what we’ve been missing.
“Plus, we played great defense today. I think we played the best defense, especially in the infield, that I’ve seen us play in my career here. We made all the routine plays, but we also made a few that were better than routine.”
