BOYS TRACK & FIELD
Chambersburg 103, Mifflin County 36: The Trojans opened their season at the Huskies on Tuesday in a Mid Penn Commonwealth meet and easily captured a win, sweeping 5 events along the way.

Okenie McLaughlin

“Sweeps in both hurdles events and three of the four jumping events showcased the depth our team hopes to have in some events, perhaps more so than in the last couple of seasons,” Chambersburg coach Jim Boyer said.

Double individual winners were Jon Dawe in the 110 (16.9) and 300 hurdles (40.3) and Okenie McLaughlin in the triple (44-8) and high jumps (5-4).

Also taking wins on the track were Julian Clark in the 1600 (4:39), Cole Lehman in the 800 (2:09.6) and Hewan Hennes in the 200 (23.8).

The winning 4×100 relay (45.3) included Jayden Stokes, Brycen Purvis, Jackson Dawe and Hennes, while the first-place 4×400 team (3:36.3) included Jon Dawe, Brock Chlebowski, Boston Vincenti and Daniel Souza Casagrande.

In the field, Alex Cross captured the long jump with a leap of 21-3 and Luke Mertz won the pole vault with a height of 12-9.

Boyer said, “I’m hoping this will serve as a good rust buster before our top guys see some good competition (30-plus teams competing) in Saturday’s Tim Cook Invitational.”

Chambersburg’s all-time record in boys track & field is an impressive 451-156.

GIRLS TRACK & FIELD
Chambersburg 106, Mifflin County 44: The Trojans had no trouble getting past the Huskies in a Mid Penn Commonwealth meet held Tuesday afternoon in Lewistown to open their season.

Dechea Davis

Chambersburg won all three relays and took first place in every field event.

“We had a really nice first meet; I was pleased with the team’s effort. Winning all three relays is a good sign,” Trojan coach Chris Monheim said.

The Trojans had 3 girls win twice individually — Dechea Davis took the 100 in 12.7 and the 300 hurdles in 50.8; Natalie Quinn was the winner in the 800 (2:31.1) and 1600 (5:46.6) races and Fi Richards won the shot put (career-best 31-0) and discus (89-9).

Other victors included Emily Mitchell (100 hurdles, 17.3); Kendall Temchak (javelin, 87-1); Mimi Sistrunk (high jump, 4-10); Olivia Coy (triple jump, 33-4.5); Jaxin Frazer (long jump, 15-3) and Ada Velazquez (pole vault, 7-9).

Monheim said, “Newcomer Dechea Davis was a big highlight; she’s very talented and very versatile. Addy Brubaker, Maggie Holtry and Natalie Quinn were all over the scoresheet on the track and Emily Mitchell and Marlee Jackson got big points in the hurdles.”

The 4×100 relay of Frazer, Natalia Anderson, Bree Paetow and Brubaker had a time of 51.3; the 4×400 team of Brubaker, Coy, Paetow and Holtry clocked in at 4:17.1 and the 4×800 squad of Ellie Rife, Isabel Clark, Holtry and Quinn was timed in 10:21.4.

SOFTBALL
Cumberland Valley 2, Chambersburg 0: The Trojans’ Issie Slimmer and CV’s Lauren Richardson locked up in a pitchers’ duel Tuesday afternoon in New Kingstown and the Eagles’ 2-run fourth inning was the difference in a Mid Penn Commonwealth matchup.

Issie Slimmer

“The girls were really focused and played with a ton of energy,” Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said. “It was a typical CV-Cburg game that came down to a couple of errors and key hitting by them in one inning. And we didn’t get the clutch hits to answer.

“Leaving 9 runners on base, including having some baserunners on second with less than two outs isn’t going to win many games against quality opponents. We had some really good at bats late, but hit it right to them.”

Slimmer allowed only 3 hits and 1 earned run, striking out 6 and walking none. Richardson gave up 4 hits and walked 4, but also had 11 strikeouts.

Skultety said, “Issie pitched a really great game and was very efficient, throwing only 65 pitches. She gave us a great chance to win.”

In the bottom of the 4th, CV’s Janelle Schneider hit a one-out double and scored on a hit by Richardson. A Trojan errors then let in the second run.

Freshman Piper Jones was 2-for-3, and Erissa Varner and Marley Onomastico each had 1 hit for Chambersburg.

Skultety said, “It was a great learning experience early in the year to show us what we need to do in order to compete at that high level.”
