Trojans are 6th in PIAA swimming after 1st day

LEWISBURG — Chambersburg’s boys had a really good first day at the PIAA Class 3A Swimming Championships on Wednesday afternoon.

So good that the Trojans are in 6th place in the team standings (and 1st among District 3 teams) after the first day. Swimming continues Thursday at Bucknell University.

Alex Kaczmark

“We had a really great first day, Chambersburg coach Chad White said. “Everyone that swam today made it back into the A or B final.”

In the 200 freestyle, Amir Tasker had the best time of anubody in the prelims (1:38.64), falling just 2 tenths of a second behind former Trojan state champion Derek Estep for the eam record. But Tasker had to settle for 4th in the final, touched out for 3rd by teammate Alex Kaczmark (1:39.01). Tasker’s time was 1:39.47.

White said, “They both hit personal bests and earned a medal. It was so great to see Alex medal and have such a strong race in his last 200 free high school race. Amir really went for it today and his place was really special. The three swimmers that finished ahead of him are all seniors.”

Chambersburg’s 200 freestyle relay team took 7th, with Kaczmark, Tasker, Cristian Pong and Ethan White hitting the wall in 1:25.10, which dropped time from their prelim race and set a team record.

Amir Tasker

In the 100 butterfly, Pong placed 10th in 48.92, followed right bebind by Tasker (49.93). Cullen McGraw also placed 15th in the 200 IM in a time of 1:55.07.

“Cristian and Amir showed up in the 100 fly B final and both of them swam times that would usually have put them in the top 8 for all-state,” White said. “Cullen had such a great 200 IM — it was his best time by about 3 seconds and he made the B final out of the first heat.

“Sitting in sixth place is awesome right now. I think we are swimming welll and have some races we can move up in tomorrow.”
