HERSHEY — Olivia Kearns ran into a buzz saw in the PIAA finals Saturday evening.
The Shippensburg sophomore performed on the Giant Center stage in Hershey for the girls wrestling championships at 118 pounds, after scoring three pins to advance to the final.
The only problem was that her opponent was very formidible. Marlee Solomon of Canon-McMillan is ranked No. 2 in the country, has a 119-3 career record, and the junior was shooting for her second straight state championship.
And she got it, taking it to Kearns for a 16-1 technical fall in 2:44.
Solomon scored on a single-leg attack in the first few seconds. Kearns then broke free for an escape to make it 3-1.
But when Kearns started a shot, Solomon countered with a nasty headlock for a takedown. Kearns was somehow able to fight off her back, but Solomon received 4 points for a 10-1 lead after one period.
Kearns rode for a short while to start the second period, but Solomon gained a reversal, and then used bars to notch another 4-point nearfall for the tech fall.
For the season, Kearns finished with a record of 28-2, and her two-year career record is now 62-5, with two PIAA medals — fifth last year and second this year.
