HERSHEY — Olivia Kearns has earned a shot at a coveted state championship.
The Shippensburg sophomore scored a pin in the semifinals at 118 pounds at the PIAA Girls Wrestling Championships on Friday night at Giant Center in Hershey to advance to Saturday afternoon’s 4 p.m. finals.
In the final, Kearns (27-1) will tangle with Canon-McMillan’s Marlee Solomon (37-0), the top seed. Solomon, also a sophomore, was the state champion at 112 last year.
Semifinal opponent Lillian Rumsey of Williamsport took a shot right off the opening whistle and had Kearns in danger of allowing a takedown. But Kearns was able to stave off the shot, and did some serious scrambling to cause a stalement.
On the restart, Kearns shot quickly and took Rumsey down with a double-leg attack. She was then able to use her prodigious skills with bars to turn Rumsey twice for an 11-0 lead after one period. Rumsey chose down for the second, and it took Kearns just 43 seconds to turn her with bars again and score the fall.
In the early afternoon quarterfinals, Kearns breezed to a pin in 0:45 over Kaila Keesecker of Derry. She hit for a quick takedown, then put Keesecker in bars and stacked her up for the fall.
The other area quarterfinalst was Auland Stanton of Chambersburg at 170 pounds. She was defeated 10-0 by Elysabeth Myer of Brockway, then in the consolations, she suffered a 9-1 loss to Alyssa Tresco of Kiski Prep.
Trojan coach Josh Sherman said, “I was proud of how Aulana wrestled today. Winning a match or two was the plan, but she has nothing to hang her head about.”
The quarterfinal bout remained scoreless until Myer finally broke out of Stanton’s tough ride for a reversal with 1:14 left in the second. But a pair of 4-point nearfalls for Myer quickly followed, one in bars and one in a cradle. In the consy match, Tresco led only 4-0 in the third, but a takedown gave her more breathing room.
“We got a lot of valuable data as a program from this event,” Sherman said. “We will put together an offseason plan and get back to chopping wood and carrying water.”
In the boys Class 3A competition, Chambersburg freshman Deakon Snavely was pinned in consolations at 215 pounds by Cael Ott of Penn Trafford in 4:22. They each had an escape and it was 1-1 until Ott grabbed a single, lifted Snavely off the mat, brought him down for the takedown and finished with a pin.
“Deakon got some significant experience this week and wrestled well,” Trojan coach Craig Hight said. “That match didn’t end the way we expected or wanted, but he learned some important lessons that I’m certain he will take into the coming years and continue to improve.”
