Trojans finish 3rd in District 3 boys swimming team race

NEW KINGSTOWN — Chambersburg couldn’t quite catch up to host Cumberland Valley and Hershey in the team standings at the District 3 Class 3A boys swimming championships on Saturday afternoon.

Cullen McGraw

But the Trojans did perform well and qualified a bunch of swimmers and relays for the PIAA Championships held March 11-12 at Bucknell University.

“It was a great overall result this weekend,” Chambersburg boys coach Chad White said. “The boys swam very well on little rest, which bodes very well for how states could go. We should have all three relays and nine individual races qualified for states.”

The Trojans’ highest finisher Saturday was Cullen McGraw, who was second in the 500 freestyle, coming in less than 2 seconds behind Greyson DiMariano of Wilson. McGraw’s time was 4:38.28, about a second better than his seed time.

Ethan White placed fifth in the 500, with a time of 4:41.46. A pair of Chambersburg swimmers took sixth place — Alex Kaczmark in the 100 freestyle (46.70) and Cristian Pong in the 100 backstroke (52.48). The Trojans had three others in the top 22 in that event (Luke Ritchie 11th, Griffin Adamek 18th and Xavier Covington 22nd).

Coach White said, “Xavier and Griffin swam really well in their last races as Trojans. They have been tremendous assets to the program these last 4 years and will be missed. Alex, Cullen, Ethan and Cristian all swam times today that will qualify them for states with good seeds.”

Chambersburg also finished in third place in the 400 free relay. Kaczmark, White, McGraw and Ritchie posted a time of 3:09.48.

“Luke was a big addition to our team this year,” White said. “He swam on two relays and scored big points in the 100 back with a personal-best time.”

Ava Grove

CV won the meet with 280 points, Hershey had 265.5 and Chambersburg scored 235.

In the girls competition, the Trojans’ Calla Hoffman came up with the best finish of the day, taking third in the 100 backstroke in a time of 58.27.

Teammate Audrey Keller placed 15th in the same event in 1:01.49, while Ava Grove finished 18th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.09.

Chambersburg was 15th in the team standings.

“The girls hadanother good day,” Trojan coach Abbie Reichelderfer said. “Calla had a PR in the backstroke and we hope she qualifies for states. Audrey’s time in the backstroke was a high-school best for her, and Ava was close to her best. We also had a strong finish in the 400 relay.

“We had a really fun meet and I think the girls are pleased with how this weekend went.”

Waynesboro’s Mady Barker took home an 8th-place finish in the 500 freestyle in 5:13.74, and the Maidens were 11th in the team race.
